i have been thinking about spring lately....so i decided to make this post...it gives sort of a short background about the phenonmena(with diagrams) and ends with a couple of pics. of spring in south korea.
Equinoxes occur twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth's axis is inclined neither away from nor toward the Sun, causing the Sun to be located vertically above a point on the equator.
The name is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because at the equinox the night and day are equally long. The term equinox can also be used in a wider sense, as the date (day) that such a passage happens.
An equinox happens each year at two specific moments in time (not a whole day) when the centre of the Sun can be observed to be vertically above the Earth's equator, occurring around March 20 or 21 and September 22 or 23 each year.
The First Day of Spring is Friday, March 20, 2009
First day of spring- Northern Hemisphere
The first day of spring for the Northern Hemisphere this year (2009) is March 20. The equinox will be at 5:48 GMT.
In general, the four seasons correspond to the relative position of the Sun to the earth. Meteorological determination of Spring is calculated when the Sun passes through the equatorial plane. When going from Winter to Spring, the Sun is moving North, and as soon as the Sun crosses the equator, we call it Spring.
The above applies north of the equator.
First day of spring - Southern Hemisphere
"Spring", a time of melting and new growth, occurs about September-November south of the equator (like in Australia, New Zealand, Africa, Brazil...).
Official date of spring south of the equator (corresponding to the first official day of fall north of equator) would be around September 20/21, depending on when the sun crosses the equator.
Spring is my Favorite season..i love the blossoms, the colors, the sunshine, the clean crisp spring feeling...oh and i love wearing skirts....hope you enjoy the post!!!
